I'm a Believer

I am writing this while feeling the best kind of speechless.

I decided to hold off writing yesterday's so I could write about Doctor Who today.

Now, first of all, let me explain a few things. In the past I have only dipped in and out of series of Doctor Who, never watching more than one episode at a time. However, this series after the appearance of a new Doctor I decided to really give the show a chance and I have watched every episode this series without fail and mostly I have been very impressed and today's series finale just about topped it.

There is too much to say about it all, really, so basically I am going to make a load of sweeping statements about things and basically sum up by saying that I loved it- Ok? Ok.

I thought things couldn't get any better when I saw the Van Gogh episode but I was so very wrong- the last episode was just a masterpiece.

My favourite thing about this series as a whole was probably the new doctor and assistant (or should I say assistants)- both the Doctor, Amy and Rory are brilliant characters, well portrayed and I was gripped into each of their stories and engaged with them right from the start. I have a particular soft-spot for Rory and I would definitely like to be Amy.

Highlights of the final episode included- (This will contain spoilers)

Rory watching over the Pandorica for thousands of years while Amy was inside. I almost cried at this story- it was just so beautiful and had the feel of an epic love story, particualarly when considering how Amy often appears to show preferance towards the Doctor and yet it is Rory who waits for her. Rory really was the man who waited and for this I love him. Every woman should have a Rory who is willing to wait lifetimes for her, without grumbling, without giving up just so he can protect her. Lovely. I have always been a sucker for love stories.

Other highlights included the Doctor's fez wearing - "It's a fez. I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool." I really enjoy the almost cartoon way that Matt Smith portrays the Doctor along with the usual quirkiness the role entails. Also, the wedding at the end "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" - I will never look at that old saying in the same way again. I really hope the Tardis turns up at my sister's wedding this summer- it really won't be right otherwise.

As a writer I was very jealous of how well everything was pieced together- the whole series was very well thought out and I am pleased to say that even I was kept guessing in places (not an easy thing as I have grown good at guessing over the years). The comic moments were also good and made the situations seem more real as well as keeping the episode from becomming too serious. I found myself thinking many times 'I wish I had thought of that' or typically 'I wish I had written that'. Shame, now I can't without someone pointing out that I stole it. I guess, if I had a Tardis then I could go back and change that...

The episode ended with a well constructed denouement where all the loose ends that needed to be tied up for things to make sense were, but enough loose ends were left for the next series to feed off of. Great work.

Doctor Who is a great programme? I have to say I am now a Believer.
